GAFCONM MATRICULATES 490 NURSING & MIDWIFERY STUDENTS, COMMISSIONS MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

Published on 3rd April, 2026

In a historic double celebration, the Ghana Armed Forces College of Nursing and Midwifery (GAFCONM) has officially commissioned several new infrastructure projects and matriculated 490 students into its Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery programme for the 2025/2026 academic year.

The landmark event, held on April 2, 2026, on the college premises within the 37 Military Hospital, marked the admission of the second batch of students into the four-year degree programme. It was a day of commitment, vision, and strategic growth for one of Ghana’s premier military-affiliated health training institutions.

New Infrastructure Unveiled

The commissioning of new projects was jointly performed by the Chief of Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai and the President of the National Defence University (NDU), Air Vice Marshal Dr. Felix Adom Asante.

The newly inaugurated facilities include:

  • A modern cafeteria complex with administrative offices
  • A state-of-the-art multipurpose conference room
  • A perimeter fence wall and enhanced security post
  • A new generator plant

These projects are expected to significantly improve the learning environment, security, and overall welfare of both students and staff.

A Call to Global Care

Delivering his address under the theme, “From Classroom to Global Care: Nurses and Midwives Shaping Universal Health Coverage,” the Acting Principal of GAFCONM, Major Bright Attah Addae, urged the newly matriculated students to uphold integrity, compassion, and academic excellence.

“You are not just students; you are future officers of care in a global health system,” Major Addae said. He assured the matriculants of quality training that blends scientific knowledge, ethical grounding, and practical skills essential for professional success.

However, the Acting Principal also candidly highlighted ongoing challenges, including inadequate hostel facilities, limited lecture halls, and a shortage of doctoral-level faculty. He made a passionate appeal to stakeholders for support, particularly through initiatives like the GETFund, to help provide scholarships and expand infrastructure.

Dignitaries Urge Discipline and Excellence

The Special Guest of Honor, Air Vice Marshal Dr. Felix Adom Asante, President of the National Defence University, commended the college for its unwavering commitment to training skilled healthcare professionals. He emphasized the critical role nurses and midwives play in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system.

“Matriculation is more than a ritual; it is a solemn commitment to discipline, service, and academic excellence,” AVM Dr. Asante told the students, urging them to adhere strictly to institutional values and professional ethics.

The Chairperson for the occasion, former Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Professor Mrs. Rosemond Aboagye Boohene, encouraged students to pursue academic excellence while cultivating discipline, integrity, and a strong work ethic. She stressed the importance of preparing for emerging health challenges, both communicable and non-communicable diseases and urged the matriculants to develop leadership qualities that would enable them to serve society effectively.

A Gathering of Leaders

The event was graced by senior officials of the Ghana Armed Forces Health Services, faculty members, staff, proud parents, and the newly matriculated students. The atmosphere was one of pride, purpose, and promise as GAFCONM continues to solidify its reputation as a centre of excellence in nursing and midwifery education in Ghana.

Congratulations to all 490 new students. Welcome to GAFCONM, where your journey from classroom to global care begins.
